Selling on Oppo - A Guide

Selling stuff on Oppo, always kinda a gray area...well no more! The idea of marketing goods via the network that exists in Oppositelock has come up a few times here and there and in the interest of clarity and hopefully keeping this place the oddball, off-topic and interesting place that it is we’ve come up with a guide and set of rules for using Oppositelock to sell your stuffs.

First off, Oppositelock is not marketplace and generally speaking using Oppo as sales platform is prohibited. That having been said, there are some circumstances where these activities are in the best interest of the community; Stickers for Oppo, car art and other works of creativity that are in Oppo’s wheelhouse, so to speak, add to the community and increase the quality of Oppositelock. In addition, if you have an interesting car or car parts you know of for sale, or are selling one yourself and you think we would want to know about, it would be acceptable provided it meets the criteria. What criteria you ask? The general test would be to ask:

Does this add to the community or is it for personal gain only?

In addition to this test we ask that you abide by simple rules to help you avoid confrontation with other community members and to make sure your intentions are clear.

Please write up any sales posts on your personal author blog and share to Oppositelock. i.e. HammerheadFistpunch shared a post to Oppositelock

DO NOT ask for money directly in your post or comments. Instead please link to a marketplace outside of Kinja. I.e., selling wheels? Link to your craigslist add/eBay add but do NOT ask for offers, include a payment button, deal directly through Kinja comments or through solicitation of emails through Kinja comments. We want to help you find a new owner for those wheels, we DO NOT want to be the market place for it.

DO NOT spam Oppositelock. If you have a product that you will be selling over time, for example stickers, please choose a tag for your post and call attention to the tag so people may find it down the road, you are free to re-post from time to time but excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Whats excessive? If we think we are seeing too much of it or are getting complaints about it we as moderators will let you know and ask you to tone it down.

Only contributing members of the community should consider using Oppositelock to sell their items. Generally speaking we want new authors and new perspectives and so authorship is a pretty straigh t forward process with a high success rate, however, that does NOT mean that we won’t ban you strait away if it’s clear you are using Oppo primarily to hawk your wares. Token efforts apply here is well; if you want to use Oppositelock to sell your items you need to be adding to this community – Again - Does this add to the community or is it for personal gain only?

No Reselling. If you don’t own the creative rights to something, or are acting solely as a middleman, we will pull your post and issue a warning.

Are you seeing a pattern here? We want you to be able to have the opportunity to express your creativity and fund your crazy hobbies, but the first and great priority here is that it needs to exists to make Oppo “richer” and not just yourself.

To be clear, this hasn’t been a big problem in the past and we hope that doesn’t change going forward, but we’ve had enough isolated samples to feel that laying down some groundwork would be in order. Thanks and happy Oppo

This is sensible and straightforward. Good Oppo. Pretty much most of this falls under rule #1, but it’s good to have the clarification. Have you guys considered mentioning sigs? I personally don’t have a problem with sigs like Lehto’s or McParland’s that link out to their other services since they’re contributing to the community and if the community wants more, it’s there passively as opposed to being in your face, but I’ve seen other people take fault with it before. It seems like they’re in the minority, but it might be worth mentioning.

This isn’t really related to selling things, but would it be possible to get authorship? I’ve been commenting around here for a while now and I promise I’m a nice guy! I really like the Oppo community and there have been a few things recently that I felt like sharing but couldn’t.

I don’t see an issue with sigs for posts that are thematic, ongoing series, or help add context... but then again, for my music posts on backtalk, I apply them myself, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

We don’t like to involve ourselves in the minutiae of the individual deals. If people want to arrange for additional time or distance, or if they want to talk about what constitutes abuse, and where that line is, we’ll stay out of those.

Mutually agreed upon temporary damage does not cause harm in any way that I would want to define it.

And I’m fighting really hard to avoid making size jokes about the smaller than a dime comment.

(and just in case it needs to be said, if there is anyone who truly believes that this is serious, in any way shape or form, lighten up ).

Hahahaha, saw it on a TV show called The League once.

Basically take a mason jar (or other good sealable container) pour in milk, then place uncooked chicken into it. package up in a box and send it along.

By the time they open, the milk and the chicken have spoiled.

Best if they don’t know what they’re opening.

When it broke on the show, it had been sitting for about a week, and of course it accidentally broke on the guy who made it - so be careful. Also, it apparently smelled so bad they wouldn’t let the guy in the house!

Again - remember I saw this on TV and have no idea how effective it would be. I imagine it would be horrid, but you have to somehow get them to actually open it/break it.

The point of the post wasn’t necessarily to sell it as you can see. In fact it’s still not for sale. I decided to just toss out there that I would be selling it and if someone was interested they’re free to inquire since we do have a lot of Seattle-ish oppos. I was not warned nor did any commenter correct me.

I think this is a really good point to try out the test: does it make oppo better. I think it does. What I we are trying to avoid specifically is for people to be swapping bids and emails in the comments. I realize that you have to get someones email to deal privately offline but its just in an attempt to put distance from us and a reseller. The best solution would be if you have it posted for sale someplace and you liked so that your email can remain hidden, its a two way street of privacy, that being said...if you are comfortable giving oout your address or can create an alternate on that its a decision you need make for youself. Again, its about keeping oppo free of sales abuse, not using a “no sales” policy to kill the vibe here.

So lets say I create the blog and once a week post an Oppo for sale “best of” Summing up items for sale each week on the market place. Would that be permissible? It wouldn’t be for personal gain and I wouldn’t be spamming if it was only one a week.

What kinds of things are you posting? And who does it benefit? The key is the test: does this make oppo better. If there are enough people selling stuff on opp that a weekly best of makes sense then I would argue that its worth looking it. Spoiler alert: there aren’t, in fact this guide was more out of “what if” than “this is a problem”. I don’t see a legit reason for it to exist at this point.
